Overview of Vernen Wells
Vernen Wells is one of the three planets in the Hydra Sector, known for its arid, rocky terrain and strategic military significance. Often referred to as “The Red Planet”, its landscape features great shallow basins, sunken deserts, and towering plateaus. The planet played a crucial role in Super Earth’s military logistics and training operations, becoming a battleground during multiple Automaton invasions.
Topography
Vernen Wells is characterized by large mesas and plateaus, some skyscraper-sized, which pose challenges for Helldiver deployments due to obstructed stratagem use. Its iron-rich terrain, dominated by hematite deposits, gives the planet its distinct red hue, while seismic instability and strong winds generate a pervasive layer of fine red dust, which can clog machinery and affect visibility.
The majority of plant life consists of dry grasslands and shrubs, with local flora and fauna evolving extreme water efficiency to survive in the harsh, arid environment.
History
Vernen Wells played a pivotal role in Super Earth’s military infrastructure following the establishment of the Menkent Line. A SEAF Forward Command Base was built on the planet to provide reinforcements and supplies to Menkent and Lesath. However, after the Lesath breach, this base was heavily damaged. The planet was then chosen as one of the four locations for new training facilities to process the influx of volunteers after the Galactic War on Tyranny was declared. Tragically, these facilities were destroyed during Operation Freedom’s Calling.
As the war intensified, Vernen Wells became the site of multiple battles against the Automatons. It was first lost in April 2184 during Operation Enduring Bulwark, when Automaton forces overwhelmed its defenders and disabled the planet’s long-range communication arrays. Despite Helldiver efforts to slow the invasion, they lacked the numbers to hold the planet. After the fall, SEAF engineers were deployed under Helldiver protection to restore communications, but the planet remained under Automaton control.
In June 2184, Vernen Wells was selected as one of the primary targets for Operation Trolley Problem, which prioritized the rescue of refugees over securing strategic resources. During this operation, the Helldivers heroically saved all 4,311 children from Super Citizen Anne’s Hospital for Very Sick Children, choosing to preserve innocent lives rather than prioritize weapons and supplies. The planet would later be lost again to the Automatons, but this mission became one of the most celebrated in Helldiver history.
Months later, during Operation Ecological Immolation, Helldivers launched a counteroffensive and managed to liberate the planet once more. However, the Automatons retaliated and recaptured it during Operation Bulwark of Democracy, marking yet another brutal chapter in Vernen Wells’ struggle for freedom. Further attempts to reclaim the planet during Operation Spark of Liberty failed, and it remained occupied throughout the Interim Period (Nov 12 – Feb 3rd).
Despite its repeated falls, Vernen Wells became a symbol of Helldiver resilience, a planet where countless battles were fought and lives were saved.
