Overview of Mort

Mort is one of the five planets within the Xzar Sector, known for its dense wetlands, rocky terrain, and thick crimson fog that significantly reduces visibility. Once a quiet colony, Mort became a key battleground in the Second Galactic War, facing some of the closest and most intense battles against the Automaton forces.

Topography

Mort’s surface is largely covered in swamps, with tree-lined wetlands and vine-covered flora dominating the landscape. The grayish-crimson terrain is interspersed with rocky hills, low-lying sandy patches, and scattered lakes. The crimson-orange fog that blankets the planet reduces visibility, making combat engagements particularly challenging.

History

Mort was among the first planets targeted during the Automaton Expeditions of February 2184. As the Helldivers successfully liberated Heeth and Angel’s Venture, the Automatons launched a surprise assault on the Xzar Sector, with Mort becoming the primary battlefield in their offensive.

During the First Battle of Mort, which lasted 46 hours, the Helldivers engaged in one of the closest and most brutal fights in recorded history. The battle reached a critical moment when a global communication outage severed the Helldiver fleet in half, leaving ground forces stranded with only three minutes remaining before planetary defenses collapsed. Against overwhelming odds, the Helldivers held out, allowing the fleet to reconnect just in time to drive the Automatons back.

Mort returned to the forefront of war again during Operation Enduring Bulwark, where the Automatons broke containment at the Menkent line, threatening to overrun the galactic west. As chaos spread, Helldivers chose Mort as their rallying point, mounting a defensive stand that ultimately repelled the invasion and prevented the Automatons from securing another foothold.

The Second Battle of Mort took place in April 2184, as the Automatons renewed their offensive. Recognizing the strategic importance of Mort, the Helldivers launched a coordinated counterattack, successfully holding the planet and securing Super Earth’s first major victory against the Automatons in over a week.

However, peace was short-lived. By June 21st, while Helldivers were engaged in Operation Hive Breaker in the Eastern Sectors, Automaton forces from Charbal-VII launched a surprise assault on Mort. Underdefended, the planet fell, enabling the Automatons to launch a dual offensive on Ingmar and Vandalon IV. Though quickly retaken, Mort remained under threat due to an open FTL supply line to Charbal-VII.

Following Operation Andromeda, which cut Automaton-controlled territory in half, the Helldivers launched a final counteroffensive, liberating Charbal-VII on July 20th and securing Mort for good.
